I love the second line groove from “N’awlins” (New Orleans) and wanted to make an instrumental based around the 3-2 clave. Unlike how I usually compose, I went to a gig one night (not with NFB) in which I simply put a chord chart in front of the bass player, and improvised a melody. I recorded the live version and extracted whatever caught my ear into a written melody. This is why the tune’s melody is sparse and has a lot of improvised portions.
